The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has lost its remaining seat in the Senate following the defection of the senator representing Kano Central, Rufai Hanga, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Truthng reports that Hanga’s defection was formally announced on Tuesday during plenary when the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, read his letter on the floor of the upper legislative chamber.
The development marks a major setback for the NNPP, which no longer has representation in the Senate.
In his letter, Hanga said he decided to leave the NNPP because of unresolved internal disputes within the party.
He said factional disagreements and conflicting leadership positions had created an unstable political environment, making it difficult for him to carry out his legislative responsibilities effectively.
According to him, the crisis in the NNPP had affected the party’s direction and weakened its ability to support elected representatives in the discharge of their duties.
Hanga said his decision was taken after wide consultations with his constituents and political stakeholders.
He added that the NDC better reflects his political priorities and governance vision.
With Hanga’s defection, the NNPP now has no seat in the Senate.
The current composition of the Senate shows that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has 89 seats, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has seven.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has four seats, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) now has three, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Accord Party and Labour Party have one seat each.
