Tussle for supremacy, as Emir Sanusi II, Bayero Jostle to preside over prayers at palace mosque

The ancient city of Kano is tense as the two rival Emirs—the reinstated Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and the dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero—have made it clear that they intend to hold Jumaat prayers at the Palace Central Mosque, despite the ongoing royal unrest rocking the city’s foundation.

Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was reinstated, was scheduled to lead the Jumaat prayers at the mosque on Thursday night, according to a press statement signed by Munir Sanusi Bayero and Danburan Kano.

According to the statement, the two rakat Friday prayers are anticipated to be led by Emir Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, who lives in the Palace and is nearer to the opposing mosque.

A statement clarified that Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of the City, has been presiding over the Jumaat prayers at the Palace Central Mosque.

The statement by Danburan invited Kano residents to come and listen to the sermon to be delivered by Emir Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II.

However, another statement from an aide of the deposed Emir, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero invited residents to join him at the Emir’s Palace Friday Mosque to observe the Juma’at prayer.

It stated that the movement to the Emir’s Palace Mosque starts at 12.30 pm.

Police have not yet offered a statement regarding the development, though.
