WhatsApp reveals new features to improve chats and security

WhatsApp is rolling out a series of new features in October 2024 to enhance the user experience for both Android and iOS users. These updates are designed to improve communication, allow more customisation of chats, and boost security with a new image verification tool.

New image verification tool

One of the most notable updates is the ‘Search on web’ feature, aimed at helping users verify the authenticity of images. This tool, found under the three-dot menu when viewing a forwarded image, allows users to perform a web search to check whether the image is real or fake, aiding in the fight against misinformation.

iOS chat widget redesign

iOS users will benefit from a revamped chat widget, offering quicker access to their conversations directly from the home screen. This interactive widget now allows viewing up to four chats at once or focusing on a single conversation, giving users more flexibility in managing their messages.

Chat customisation and new themes

WhatsApp is also introducing over 20 new chat themes, providing users with more ways to personalise their conversations. These themes can be applied to individual chats or across multiple conversations, making the app feel more personalised.

Simplified call link feature

Another convenience added to WhatsApp is a new call link feature, making it easier to start voice or video calls. Users can now generate call links directly from the chat window without navigating to the Calls tab, streamlining the process for both personal and group calls.

These features, currently in beta, are expected to be widely available soon.
