The House of Representatives has adopted the position of the upper legislative chamber-the Senate on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 which prescribed, direct, indirect and consensus options for political parties nomination of candidates for election.
The House on Wednesday January 19 2021 passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 which was earlier passed by the Senate and adopted the direct and indirect mode of primary for the nomination of candidates by political parties.
Nonetheless, the House has revisited the earlier position, and adopted the consensus option included in the Senate version of the Bill passed on Tuesday January 18, 2021 by the Senate.
The decision of the House followed the third reading of the Bill earlier passed by both chambers of the apex legislature but rejected by President Muhammedu Buhari on the ground that there is no provision for indirect primary for political parties.
Speaking to newsmen after the passage of the contentious bill into law,Spokesman of the House Hon. Benjamin Kalu said that House suspended its rules to enable them satisfy the reality. Of time.
He said that the full version of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 passed by the House is direct, indirect and consensus options for political parties nomination of its candidates.
He however hinted that there are pre condition that a political party which a consensus candidate shall wait for the other parties to fanalize their their position on choice of candidate.
The Abia born lawmaker added that the greater good of the people of Nigeria should be the driving force for making of by law by lawmakers for the people of Nigeria.
